Fibromyalgia
Comprehensive, Safe & Effective Treatment Approach
By Dr. Farzad Farahmand
Fibromyalgia is a common and complex chronic pain disorder that can affect people physically, mentally and socially. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome rather than a disease. Unlike a disease, which is a medical condition with a specific cause or causes and recognizable signs and symptoms, a syndrome is a collection of signs, symptoms, and medical problems that tend to occur together but are not related to a specific identifiable cause.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, decreased pain threshold, sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities.
Whether you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or suffer from its symptoms, or have a family member or friend with the disorder, this article provides you with a better understanding of this chronic pain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, as well as introducing a very powerful, safe and highly effective comprehensive treatment plan to treat the different causes of the symptoms rather than only bringing about symptomatic relief.
Symptoms:
Pain
The pain of fibromyalgia is profound, chronic and widespread. It can migrate to all parts of the body and vary in intensity. Fibromyalgia pain has been described as stabbing and shooting pain and deep muscular aching, throbbing, and twitching. Neurological complaints such as numbness, tingling, and burning are often present and add to the discomfort of the patient. The severity of the pain and stiffness is often worse in the morning. Aggravating factors that affect pain include cold/humid weather, light sleep, physical and mental fatigue, excessive physical activity, physical inactivity, anxiety and stress.
Fatigue
In today's world many people complain of fatigue, but the fatigue of Fibromyalgia is much more than just being tired after a particularly busy day or after a sleepless night, but rather is a comprehensive exhaustion that can interfere with occupational, personal, social or educational activities. Symptoms include profound exhaustion and poor stamina.
Sleep problems
Many fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder that prevents them from getting deep, restful, restorative sleep. During sleep, individuals with Fibromyalgia are constantly interrupted by bursts of brain activity, limiting the amount of time they spend in deep sleep.
Other symptoms / overlapping conditions
Additional symptoms may include irritable bowel and bladder, headaches and migraines, restless legs syndrome (periodic limb movement disorder), impaired memory and concentration, skin sensitivities and rashes, dry eyes and mouth, anxiety, depression, ringing in the ears, dizziness, vision problems, Raynaud's Syndrome, neurological symptoms, and impaired coordination.
Possible causes of Fibromyalgia
No specific underlying cause has been identified for Fibromyalgia. This disorder is associated with several nonspecific physical and mental symptoms that stem from dysfunctions in different systems of the body such as the digestive, cardiovascular and the Nervous System. Since Fibromyalgia is a syndrome or a collection of symptoms that cannot be directly related to any specific cause, the approach to it needs to be systematic and comprehensive.
Fibromyalgia by nature is both a mental and a physical disorder. Just as the mind can affect the body, the body can also have an effect on the mind. The question can be what came first, the mental disorder, the physical or a combination of both.
The two most important systems in the body that go hand in hand with the related symptoms of Fibromyalgia are the Digestive and the Nervous system. Addressing the cause of dysfunction in these two systems can tremendously improve or even eliminate the debilitating symptoms of Fibromyalgia and can help the patient suffering from the disorder to become functional in life.
The Digestive System
Having a healthy digestion can be a key factor in having a healthy mind and body. The cells, tissues and organs in our body need to be nourished constantly in order to function and remain healthy. Essential nutrients such as Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids need to be properly absorbed by the body from the diet. An insufficient absorption of nutrients during the digestive process can lead to nutritional deficiencies causing a variety of physical, as well as mental problems. Physical complications may include Arthritis, body aches and pains, circulatory problems, low energy and more. Mental disturbances such as depression, anxiety and mood swings can also occur as a result of a deficiency in Amino Acids, affecting the level of the Neurotransmitters in the Brain. Brain function can also be affected by the deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals.
The elimination of waste products in the digestive process is equally as important as the absorption process. Improper elimination of waste products can lead to a build up of toxins in the body, in turn contributing to the physical and mental symptoms of Fibromyalgia.
Nutritional deficiencies together with an increase in the level of toxins in the body can severely lower the stamina leading to a decreased level of energy, leaving the individual exhausted and often dysfunctional.
Harmonizing the function of the digestive system by maximizing the process of absorption of essential nutrients and the elimination of toxins in the body is an extremely crucial approach to the treatment of Fibromyalgia. A comprehensive cleansing system, including a Gallbladder and Liver cleanse together with cleansing the body from Parasites can be extremely effective in bringing the disorder under control.
The Nervous System
Most researchers agree that Fibromyalgia can stem from disorders in the Central Nervous System. Just as the debilitating physical symptoms of the body can cause the patient to feel depressed, anxious and isolated, mental disorders can also have a severe influence on the body. Pain amplification is among the physical symptoms that may be due to abnormalities in the sensory processing in the nervous system.
Addressing the Central Nervous System and restoring the normal electrical activity in the Brain can not only treat the mental symptoms of the disorder such as depression, anxiety and mood swings, but it can also have a positive effect on the physical symptoms.
Proper nutrition and exercise program together with addressing both the Nervous and the Digestive system is a highly effective approach to the treatment of Fibromyalgia, as well as restoring overall health and well being.
